Project Overview: Laurel Mountain, also called Laurel Hill, is a long ridge in north central West Virginia.  Along with the Rich Mountains to the south, it is considered to be the westernmost ridge of the Allegheny Mountains and the boundary between the Alleghenies and the Allegheny Plateau.  It is in this region that about 60 windmills stretching from Randolph into Barbour County will be constructed along with a substation, O&M building, and switchyard.  The wind farm will have the capacity to generate about 130 megawatts of electricity.  The project is scheduled to be finished during the summer of 2011.

O'Connell's Role: O’Connell’s role in this significant project includes underground infrastructure, collection circuitry, communication connectivity, commissioning and energizing the wind farm.


Monroe Community College Solar Project

Project Overview: The nursing program at Monroe Community College outgrew the capabilities of its existing facility.  Other campus buildings were either outdated or inadequate for new teaching methods, optimum class section sizes, and current/future technologies.  A grant has been made to the college that will allow the Nursing program to expand into new state-of-the-art facilities.

O'Connell's Role: In connection with building an energy efficient and environmentally friendly building, O’Connell Electric will be installing a 46kW photo voltaic system on the roof.  The system will be tied directly to the MCC power distribution system and utilized within the campus producing in excess of 50,000kwH per year.


New York Power Authority’s Office and Warehouse Complex

Project Overview: New York Power Authority (NYPA) has embarked on building a new warehouse and office complex for the Niagara Power Project.  The Power Authority’s plans for the three-story warehouse and office complex stem from 2006 agreements in which Niagara University (NU) committed to support NYPA’s application for the federal relicensing of the Niagara project.  The new facility will be built to specifications necessary for qualifying for Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program.  This program provides third-party verification of a building’s efficiency in the use of energy and other resources.  NYPA is projecting a completion date during the summer of 2011 for the state of the art warehouse facility.

O'Connell's Role: O’Connell will be performing all necessary work to provide 13.2kV power from the existing facility along with installing approximately a mile of new duct bank and communications backbone.

The project involves installation of a new security (access control, video surveillance, command and control) and fire alarm systems that fully integrate with existing systems.


NYSEG Corning Valley Underground Project

Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge

Project Overview: The Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge, also known as the St. Lawrence Bridge and the Seaway Skyway, is a suspension bridge connecting Ogdensburg, New York in the United States to Johnstown, Ontario in Canada.  Completed in 1960, it has a main span of 1,151 feet across the St. Lawrence River with a total distance of approximately 1.5 miles. A $22.3 million project to repair and upgrade the suspension bridge is underway to replace existing deteriorated steel deck structure, also deck replacement; elimination of raised safety walks; replacement of longitudinal stringers; replacement of bridge rail, and floor beam repair.

O'Connell's Role: O’Connell’s role is renovation of all electric services to the bridge including new under bridge raceway systems from one side to the other and installing new toll booths.


RGE TDIRP Project

Project Overview: This project is part of the utilities’ systematic capital improvement program.  One of O'Connell's responsibilities involves replacement of nitrogen gas filled 34.5kV cable with solid die-electric cables to improve reliability as well as increase capacity on the underground circuits.

 


Rochester General Hospital Electrical Room Relocation

Project Overview: This project is the final phase of establishing power redundancy for a set of network transformers and associated network protectors at the hospital in addition to the ramp garage, doctor’s office building and Hinshaw building.  In addition to the power redundancy, distribution equipment on the load side of the network protectors will be replaced.
 


Schlumberger Facility Construction Project

Project Overview: Schlumberger's 40,000 square foot facility will include a maintenance shop, bulk storage area, truck wash, and administrative buildings.

O'Connell's Role: O’Connell Electric will be installing all site electrical work for this project including 12.5 kV service that will provide two sources of power to each building.

As part of the project, O’Connell will be installing the site lighting, thirty power stations for vehicle chargers and block heaters, all teledata cable pathways, and site security.

Installed on this project will be 75,000 feet of underground conduit, 20,000 feet of HV cable, and 40,000 feet of 600V cable.


St. Joseph’s Hospital Expansion Project

Project Overview: St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center $220 million expansion is the largest project in the hospital’s 140 year history.  The expansion will include a new emergency services building, operating rooms, intensive care unit, private patient rooms, kitchen, a new data center and an emergency generator along with construction of a new loading dock building.

The expansion also will include a green roof, solar panels, site drainage and many other features that will make it environmentally friendly.  The new facility will be built to specifications necessary for qualifying for Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program.

 

O'Connell's Role: In connection with this significant expansion project, O’Connell Electric will install two new unit sub-stations to provide power to the new expansion buildings and redundancy power to the existing hospital.  This project also includes installing interior and exterior lighting systems, day light harvesting lighting controls, branch wiring systems, cable tray systems, security systems, CCTV systems, life safety systems, clock and intercom systems, communications wiring (copper and fiber) & equipment and a complete lightning protection system.
